Regarding the visit of the president of the People's Republic of China, Hu Jintao, Human Rights House Zagreb (Center for Peace Studies – CMS, B.a.B.e, Documenta, Association for Promotion of Equal Opportunities for People with Disabilities – APEO and Civic Committee for Human Rights - GOLJP) would like to focus the attention of the Government of the Republic of Croatia on the level of human rights violations that are continuously happening in China.
HRH Zagreb fully comprehends that the visit of the president Jintao is of great economic and political importance for Croatia, however good international relations with this country may be also used for making clear critics regarding the human rights violations that are happening in this country.
According to the reports made by international organizations, there is no doubt that human rights are being violated on daily basis in People's Republic of China: unreasonable arrests and imprisonment, not ensured right to a fair trial, great number of recorded examples of police brutality, and still present death penalty that 7 000 persons got in the past one year.
Chinese government also greatly limits the freedom of expression to its citizens, and freedom of religion, by using special repressive measures toward the members of Buddhist, Christian and Muslim community.
Taking in consideration the above mentioned, Human Rights House Zagreb demands from the Government of the Republic of Croatia, to openly criticize the president Hu Jintao during his visit to Zagreb, for human rights violations in People's Republic of China and remind him that the Government of China must respect international conventions on the protection of human rights.
Human Rights House Zagreb comprehends that Republic of Croatia has a national interest to improve economic relations with People's Republic of China, however that interest must not be achieved under any price which would be in this case, turning the heads from and being silent of human rights violations in that country.
